Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wanted to be involved in choosing Iran's new supreme leader.

He was even asked about reports suggesting that Mojtaba Khamenei was one of the leading candidates to replace his father.

"They are wasting their time," the US president said.

"Khamenei's son is easy, Khamenei's son is unacceptable to me," he added.

"We want something that will bring harmony and peace to Iran," Trump continued.

The son of Iran's former supreme leader has been named as his replacement, according to Iranian state media.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first US-Israeli attacks on Iran on Saturday.
