Trump's tariffs 'could force Putin closer to peace'

Vladimir Putin is showing "absolutely no sign" of wanting a ceasefire, but could be forced to the negotiating table if Donald Trump changes his tactics.

Thus, as foreign media reports, according to the Telegraph, says the former head of the British Army's chemical weapons unit.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon says the latest Russian attacks across Ukraine prove the Russian leader has no interest in ending the war.

But he adds that if Trump were to impose tariffs on Russia, especially on its oil, it could bring Putin closer to a possible peace deal.

"He seems to charge everyone else," says De Bretton-Gordon.

"But if oil, which is the basis of Putin's economy and is allowing him to continue to fight, falls to a price where he can no longer do that and Trump has the ability to do it, then these are things that Americans can do."

"I think this would bring Putin to the negotiating table. But for now he's happy to fight, because he thinks he's winning."

As US and European officials meet in Paris today, Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Ukraine's allies to "put pressure on the killers" after further Russian attacks overnight that left three people dead.

He said that any defense package for Ukraine was "to protect lives" as "Russia uses every day and every night to kill."

"We must put pressure on the killers and help end this war and guarantee a credible peace," he said.

"I want to thank all partners who use their skills in this way. Wars are stopped with force – force against the aggressor, force in the defense of life." /Telegraph/
