Trump's secretary threatens Harvard: We will take away your right to enroll foreign students

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has threatened to revoke Harvard University's right to enroll international students if it does not submit documentation of "illegal and violent activities" by foreign students by April 30, 2025, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced.

“Noem sent a stern letter demanding detailed documentation of unlawful and violent acts by foreign student visa holders at Harvard by April 30, 2025, or their SEVP certification will be immediately revoked,” the DHS statement said.

This certification allows universities to issue the forms necessary to obtain a visa to enter the U.S. for international students who have been admitted, according to DHS.

There are currently 6,793 international students studying at Harvard, accounting for 27.2% of the total enrollment in the 2024/25 academic year, according to university data.

DHS also announced it was canceling the $2.7 million payment that had been made to Harvard, writes the Guardian, the Telegraph reports.

A Harvard spokesperson said in a statement that they were aware of the letter, but they stand by their previous position that they "will not relinquish their independence or waive their constitutional rights."

"We will continue to respect the law and expect the administration to do the same," the statement said.

"If the federal government takes action against someone in our community, we expect it to be based on clear evidence, conducted through existing legal processes, and respecting constitutional rights that apply to everyone."

According to the student newspaper The Harvard Crimson, the DHS letter accuses Harvard of creating a "hostile environment for Jewish students."

"It is an honor, not a right, to have foreign students at Harvard," the letter said, according to the school newspaper.

It is learned that the letter asks Harvard to provide information about "known threats against students or university employees," "disruptions to the educational process," and any disciplinary measures "taken for threats against students or other groups or for participating in protests."

Earlier, Donald Trump's administration froze more than $2 billion in funding for Harvard after the university did not agree to the major policy changes that the White House is now demanding from other elite American universities.

Harvard has refused to scrap its diversity, equity and inclusion programs, change the way it hires workers and enrolls students, and reduce the power of its faculty and administration, which the Republican administration describes as “more committed to activism than science.”

Trump officials claim the White House wants to crack down on anti-Semitism with these demands following violent protests at universities related to the war in Gaza. /Telegraph/
