Former US President Barack Obama has clarified that the chances of Earth being visited by aliens are "low", after comments he made about extraterrestrial species attracted widespread attention online.

"They exist, but I haven't seen them," he told American presenter Brian Tyler Cohen during an interview.

"They are not being held at Area 51. There is no underground structure unless there is this big conspiracy and they hid it from the president of the United States," he added, writing BBC.

Since then, Obama has said that statistically there is a high chance that life exists, but he saw "no evidence" while he was president.

The former president's initial comments were made during a quick round of questions.

"Do aliens exist?" was the question posed to Obama.

His response was subsequently broadcast on various media outlets and attracted attention online - prompting him to release a clarifying statement on his official Instagram account.

"Since it has attracted attention, let me clarify," Obama wrote.

"Statistically, the universe is so vast that there is a good chance that there is life out there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances of aliens visiting us are low, and I have seen no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have had contact with us. Indeed," he added. /Telegraph/
