EU has no criticism of Serbia for reactions to Kenya's recognition of Kosovo

Kenya has been added to the list of countries that have recognized Kosovo's independence. As a powerful country in East Africa, Kenya officially announced on March 26 that it has recognized the state of Kosovo.

Its recognition caused numerous reactions in Kosovo and Serbia. While Kosovo leaders welcomed this decision by Kenya, on the other side of the border they expressed concern about this action of the African state.

Serbia said that such a decision constitutes "a serious violation of international law and a direct violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244, which clearly guarantees the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia."

Regarding this approach by Serbia, which is not new, the European Union has not given any concrete response as to whether the Washington agreement has been violated, which obliges Serbia to suspend its initiative to convince various countries in the world to withdraw recognition of Kosovo's independence.

A European Union spokesperson told the Telegraph that "the EU is neutral."

"We took note of Kenya's recognition of Kosovo's independence. The EU is neutral on status," the EU's response states.

The EU has further emphasized that Kosovo has a clear European perspective, mentioning here also the application it has made for membership in the European family.

"Kosovo has a clear European perspective and has submitted an application for EU membership in December 2022. The Commission remains available to prepare an Opinion on Kosovo's application for membership as soon as the Council requests it," the EU stated to the Telegraph.

It was further stated that progress on the path of Serbia and Kosovo's membership in the EU requires progress in the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

Unlike Serbia's reactions to Kenya's recognition, Kosovo's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora also reacted.

The MFA, through a reaction, emphasized that this is further evidence that Serbia has no interest in normalizing relations with Kosovo.

"Once again, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Government of Serbia have revealed their true face, showing once again that they have no interest in normalizing relations with Kosovo," the MFA's response states.

Furthermore, the Ministry assessed Serbia's statement as an unacceptable action, emphasizing that "Serbia continues its campaign of lies, manipulation and propaganda against Kosovo, using every means at its disposal to hinder our country on the path towards full integration into international mechanisms." /Telegraph/
