The three numbers available for Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid

Real Madrid are reportedly close to reaching an agreement with Trent Alexander-Arnold to join them in the summer.

The Englishman has rejected a contract extension with Liverpool and appears to be ready for a new journey in his career.

Alexander-Arnold, of course, will not be allowed to wear his favourite number 66 shirt at Real Madrid due to a La Liga rule.

The league does not allow first-team squads to have players beyond the No.25 jersey and this will force the right-back to consider a different jersey number.

Here are three interesting options he might consider.

Nr.12: Alexander-Arnold could take the shirt number that was famously worn by Marcelo during his time at Real Madrid. Like the Brazilian, he is also an attacking full-back who likes to burst forward to score goals and create chances.

The number is currently vacant and was last worn by Eduardo Camavinga, but Trent could look to elevate his legacy by enjoying a memorable stint wearing the shirt. He has actually worn the number for England on several occasions in the past and could return to Real Madrid. Plus 12 is essentially 6+6, which could make him recall his favourite number.

Nr.4: This shirt is currently worn by David Alaba, but he could leave the club this summer. Even if he doesn't, Real Madrid could ask Alaba to take a different number to free it up for Trent.

This could be a particularly special number for the right-back, as it was worn by Sergio Ramos for more than 15 years at Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold could face the challenge of trying to continue Ramos' legacy by being a fiery and clutch right-back.

Nr.18: Trent has also enjoyed some fine moments with the England national team while wearing the No.18 shirt. This shirt could be made available to the full-back, as currently assumed by Jesus Vallejo, who is likely to be sold in the summer.

Two former British players in Gareth Bale and Jonathan Woodgate have worn this shirt in the past and Trent could be the last to carry on the tradition. /Telegraph/
