A Dutch election candidate was kicked out of a live TV debate after being confused with a famous vegan.

Footage circulating on social media captured the moment security guards escorted Kevin Nuijten from the audience at the event in the southern city of Tilburg.

The conservative party candidate JA21 was seen walking towards the exit of the venue after event organizers were mistakenly informed that he was Peter Janssen, a well-known animal rights activist.

Janssen, just days before the debate, had entered a live broadcast during a discussion about the upcoming election wearing only underwear.

After Nuijten left the scene, he reportedly surrendered to police, the Telegraph reports.

JA21 said in a statement: "During the southern debate, our candidate was escorted out by the police because he resembled the 'famous vegan'. Fortunately, it was resolved quickly. Compliments to the security for their vigilance. Vote #19, JA21 for a safer Netherlands."

Nuijten was held for 15 minutes while officers tried to confirm that he was not the criminal activist, and simply an innocent parliamentary candidate.

"I explained that I am a member of the Provincial Council in Brabant and that they could search my name on Google," he said through a party spokesperson.

The parliamentary candidate described the situation as "ridiculous" and said he had "good conversations with the officers." /Telegraph/
