The recount of 914 polling stations begins, expected to last about two weeks

The recount of 914 polling stations from the December 28 elections has begun at the Counting and Results Center, which according to the Central Election Commission is expected to last from 12 to 14 days, reports Ekonomia Online.
In 10 municipalities, 100% of polling stations will be recounted, while in 28 of them only 10%.
This was announced by the CEC spokesperson, Valmir Elezi, at a press conference.
"The counting of ballots has begun at the Counting and Results Center according to the list of polling stations for which the CEC decided to recount. So, the CEC has decided to recount 914 polling stations out of 2,557 in which the regular voting process was conducted in the early elections for the Assembly of Kosovo, which were held on December 28, 2025. At the CRC, the counting will be carried out at 20 counting tables and within one day, an average of 80 ballot boxes are planned to be recounted. The counting of 914 polling stations, which constitutes 36% of polling stations, may take from 12 to 14 days," he said.
Elezi explained that the recount will not take place to the same extent in all municipalities in the country, as the CEC decision foresees different approaches depending on the municipality.
"According to the CEC decision, 100% of polling stations will be recounted in 10 municipalities (Dragash, Kaçanik, Lespoaviq, Prizren, Skenderaj, Shtime, Ferizaj, Vushtrri, Mamusha and Ranillug), while in the other 28 municipalities, 10% of polling stations will be recounted (Deçan, Gjakova, Gllogoc, Gjilan, Istog, Klina, Fushë Kosovë, Kamenica, South Mitrovica, Lipjan, Novobërdë, Obiliq, Rahovec, Peja, Podujevo, Pristina, Shtërpcë, Suhareka, Viti, Zubin Potok, Zvecan, Malisheva, Junik, Hani i Elezit, Gracanica, Partesh, Kllokot and North Mitrovica)", he emphasized.
According to the CEC spokesperson, the decision to recount was made after identifying discrepancies during the verification of votes of candidates for deputies at several polling stations.
"This decision by the CEC comes after the findings from the verification of votes of candidates for deputies from 33 different polling stations, which resulted in the candidates' votes counted at the Municipal Counting Centers not reflecting the number of votes of the candidates recorded on the ballots," he said.
Elezi added that the main goal of this process is to maintain the credibility of the elections and guarantee the will of the citizens.
"The Central Election Commission's decision to recount the votes aims to guarantee the accuracy and integrity of the electoral process. This action aims to verify every vote and ensure that the final result fairly and reliably reflects the will of the citizens," Elezi added.
The CEC's decision to recount 914 polling stations came after the presentation of a report from the verification of candidate votes for 2% of polling stations from the early elections for the Assembly of Kosovo, which were held on December 28, 2025.
According to this report, on January 10, 2026, the CEC Secretariat reviewed the video recordings of cameras placed at the counting tables in the Municipal Counting Centers and found that there were cases of discrepancies in votes for candidates.
Following these findings, the ECEC has conducted internal verification of ballots for candidates in 2% of polling stations or 52 polling stations from all municipalities of the Republic of Kosovo. By the end of Monday, January 12, 2026, 33 polling stations have been verified, where it results that the votes of the candidates counted in the Municipal Counting Centers do not reflect the number of votes of the candidates recorded on the ballots.
