The VLEN coalition and the European Front agree to sit down at the negotiating table to elect a new Ombudsman, with the aim of overcoming the four-month deadlock due to the parliamentary majority not having the majority of Badinter. VLEN coordinator Bekim Qoku says that their proposal for Faton Selami to be VLEN's successor is the best solution, however, talks need to be intensified to overcome the deadlock.

"I believe that now is the time to sit down to talk, to find a common language with the Albanian opposition because this will serve everyone. So we need to intensify the talks with the opposition and find a solution. Faton Selami is a proposal, I say, he is much better than his two predecessors," said Bekim Qoku, Coordinator of VALEN.

On the other hand, the European Front MP, Rina Ajdari, says that their position is firm that the election of the Ombudsman must not be done unilaterally, but must be based on dialogue and consensus, while offering a model for the process of selecting the chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission. However, according to Ajdari, the initiative for unblocking must come from the government.

"The example of the selection of the chairman of the State Anti-Corruption Commission. A working group composed of all political parties has been created and all candidacies are now being reviewed. Such a working group is also likely to be created for the case in question, for the selection of the Ombudsman, since we are already aware of the numerous obstacles in this institution. Of course, this must be unblocked, but I share the opinion that the initiative to unblock this process must come from the parties that are in power," said Rina Ajdari, a member of parliament from the European Front.

Meanwhile, Speaker of Parliament Afrim Gashi, in a brief interview with Alsat, stressed that the Assembly has completed all procedures for the selection of the Ombudsman, however, due to the lack of numbers, it cannot decide on the matter in the plenary session, since if it is not voted on, then the entire process must be repeated from the beginning. Gashi says that he is ready to put it on the agenda whenever the coordinators of the parliamentary groups inform him that an agreement has been reached.

As previously reported by Alsat, the failure to appoint a new Ombudsman has created problems in the functioning of this institution that protects the freedoms and rights of citizens. In addition to employees, citizens are also paying the price for the created situation, as the Ombudsman's Office acts with delays in their cases. Deputy Ombudsman Ylber Rufati told Alsat that the institution is also facing financial problems after its budget was cut by 30%./Alsat.mk
