The new Ford Mondeo (introduced yesterday in China) will not arrive in Europe where sales of mid-size sedans in the mainstream segment have been in decline for years.

Motor1.com contacted a local Ford branch and a spokesperson confirmed that the "Mondeo" name will continue to live on in China only.

The Mondeo name will be phased out in Europe after 30 years, since Ford replaced the Sierra with it three decades ago.

The main rival of the Volkswagen Passat sedan has already been discontinued, and while there will be a next-generation model, VW reportedly plans to sell it only as a wagon. Recent rumors suggest that Opel will also scrap the Insignia as we know it and change the formula to a mix of SUV and minivan.

On the other hand, Skoda has confirmed that it will sell the next-generation Superb as a sedan (or liftback) as well as a station wagon, while the Peugeot 508 is here to stay in both body styles for now.

In the end the question arises whether Ford will at least indirectly replace the Mondeo in Europe with something else. /Telegraph/
