This is the moment the roof of a nightclub in Goa, India, burst into flames and caused a devastating fire that claimed the lives of 25 people, including tourists.

The fire broke out shortly after midnight at the Birch nightclub on Saturday in Arpora in North Goa, the Telegraph reports.

It has since been brought under control and all bodies have been recovered, as rescue operations extended into the early hours of Sunday morning.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said most of the dead were kitchen workers at the club, as well as three to four tourists. Six people were injured and are in a stable condition, he added.

Footage taken moments before the deadly flames shows a woman performing on stage with a band as a small fire starts in the ceiling above her head.

No one on stage or in the crowd notices until the flames spread and burning fragments begin to fall onto the stage.

The show stopped abruptly as people tried to figure out what was happening and smoke began to fill the room.

The fire was caused by a gas cylinder explosion and has been extinguished, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, citing local police.

At least 100 people were said to be on the club's dance floor when the fire broke out, and some of them rushed to the kitchen downstairs in the chaos and were trapped along with staff.

"Today is a very sad day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident in Arpora has claimed the lives of 23 people," Chief Minister Pramod Sawant wrote on Twitter. /Telegraph/
