Urgently end the institutional vacuum

Muhamet Mustafa
Since February of this year, when the regular elections for the Assembly of Kosovo were held, we have been faced with a saga that is leaving a heavy aftertaste throughout the process of constituting the Assembly and electing the new Government. Its consequences were accompanied by a contested and damaged legitimacy of the incumbent Government, as well as negative consequences for the country's international position. Among the most serious, in economic terms, is the significant delay in the use of EU funds - within the framework of the economic growth program. For a country like Kosovo, with great needs for investments in economic development, education, research, innovation and health, this fact should not leave anyone indifferent at the institutional level and generally in all sectors of society.
When the Assembly was finally constituted, when the decreed by the president proposed the new Government and it did not receive the vote of confidence, it seemed that everyone, in power and opposition, agreed to go to new elections as soon as possible. Therefore, it was to be expected that this would materialize very quickly.
A week has passed and we are not seeing any effort to get this issue resolved and for elections to be held in early December and possibly for the New Year to find us with a new Assembly and Government. Travel abroad, which under normal conditions would certainly have its importance, in our case should not be a priority. Quite the contrary!
If the date of new elections is not announced by the beginning of next week, then the political parties must rise above the level of primitive antagonistic struggle, for power at all costs, and approve a transitional government composed proportionally of all parliamentary parties which would be headed by a consensual personality (not by any of the party leaders)! The mandate of this government would be until March 2026, when new elections would be held! If any of the parliamentary parties refuses to participate in this government, let those who agree with this form it - under the burden of responsibility for avoiding a prolonged institutional vacuum.
The risk of the country being left without a budget or with a legally contested budget, as well as the delay in collecting funds from the EU program for economic growth, should no longer be tolerated.
