Haxhiu: Two candidates are needed to call a session for the presidency

The Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, has stated that the procedure for electing the president cannot begin until there are at least two valid candidacies, as required by the Constitution of Kosovo.
"So far, I have only accepted one candidacy for president. The constitution requires that I cannot call a session to elect the president without having two candidates. The deadline for submitting candidates is March 5, and I invite all MPs who have not submitted their proposals to do so," Haxhiu said at a press conference.
According to her, the only candidacy submitted so far is that of Mr. Glauk Konjufca, proposed by 30 deputies from the ranks of the Vetëvendosje Movement and several deputies from multiethnic groups.
Haxhiu made it clear that the constitutional procedure requires at least two candidates to begin voting.
"Until we have at least two candidates who have secured the necessary support of 30 deputies, I cannot call a session to elect the president. There may be a request for extraordinary sessions, but the session to elect the president cannot take place without this condition," said Haxhiu, adding that the constitutional deadline for electing the president is March 5, 2026, that is, tomorrow, and the current situation makes the commitment of deputies more urgent.
Haxhiu has called on MPs who have not yet provided signatures for the candidates to reflect on their constitutional responsibility.
"The Assembly has 120 deputies and only 30 have signed for the first candidacy. It is possible that up to four candidates can be proposed, but at least one more candidate is needed to start the procedure," she said.
According to the speaker, if in the third round none of the candidates reaches 61 votes to elect the president, the country will go to extraordinary elections.
The Constitution also provides for a 60-day deadline for the selection of the president from the start of the procedures; if the deadline is violated, the Assembly is automatically dissolved.
"The interest of the Republic and the citizens must be above any other calculation. The lack of will and disregard for responsibility by the deputies is, for me, unreasonable," Haxhiu concluded./Telegrafi.
