A routine sleep check turned into a real-life situation for a mother when she discovered that her son had suddenly managed to escape from the baby bed without being noticed.

The event was captured on a baby monitor, and after the incident, the mother decided to radically change her evening routine.

Jamie Brough (35), from West Yorkshire, said she had put her 22-month-old son to bed as usual. The child usually slept in his cot without any problems, but this evening he didn't cry or scream - he just climbed out of bed and went into his parents' bedroom where his father grabbed him. It was only after watching the camera footage that the family realised what had happened.

Instead of moving him to a large toddler bed, Jamie decided to find a safe solution that would stop these "escapes."

She ordered a mesh canopy online for her baby's crib, which allows air to circulate but prevents the baby from climbing out. While she was setting up the canopy, the mother used a crib-sized sleeping bag to limit her little boy's movements as he climbed up to climb out.

The sofa turned out to be a pretty good solution: it is placed on the floor of the bed and through the mesh provides good air circulation and visibility, but the children cannot open it from the inside. Now the boy gets ready for bed much more easily and the family is spared from evening dramas.

Jamie says the system has worked very well and recommends it for parents who are facing the phase when their children are getting up and out of the crib but aren't yet ready for a big bed. /Telegraph/
