IHP: The best protection against the flu remains vaccination

The peak of seasonal flu is expected to reach in the next two to three weeks. Hospitals and clinics filled with patients are demanding treatment and medical advice against the flu. However, the white coats appeal not to take antibiotics without a doctor's instruction, because the patient does not know if he has a seasonal virus or bacteria. They recommend personal hygiene, consumption of fruits and vegetables, water and non-carbonated liquids.
"Do not start antibiotics immediately, because when there is a virus in the body, the body fights that virus and needs antibiotics the least, because antibiotics stop the body's first defense. Then complications can occur. For this reason, it is important to react in time and respect the advice and recommendations and not take antibiotics on your own. The most at risk categories are young children, infants, because the virus spreads quickly to them and passes more difficultly. The same applies to people with chronic diseases, whose health situation may worsen," stated pediatrician and pulmonologist, Tatjana Baevska.
Meanwhile, the Institute of Public Health continues to emphasize that the best protection against the flu remains vaccination, especially for the population over 65 years of age, children 5-6 years old, those with chronic diseases, pregnant women, and healthcare workers.
For the 2025-2026 season, the Ministry of Health has provided 80 doses of quadrivalent vaccines. In the last week of last year, 770 people sought medical help and treatment for seasonal influenza.
