The world cheese selection championship was held in the Swiss capital, Bern.

Of the 14 finalist cheeses, four were from Switzerland. And in the end, the winner was also selected from Switzerland - more precisely from the village of Vorderfultigen in the canton of Bern.

Officially, the cheese bears this title - “Gruyère AOP Vorderfultigen Spezial over 18 months”.

265 experts from around the world tested 5244 types of cheese from 46 countries. For the first time, Afghanistan and Panama also presented their cheeses.

This was the 38th championship in a row and the first time it was held in Switzerland. The international jury consists of cheesemakers, chefs, journalists and traders.

They work in pairs or groups of three, and each group examines about 50 different types of cheese.

Unlike other competitions, here the cheeses are not divided by type, but are placed randomly on the tables.

Thus, different products can be found on one table at the same time, Swiss media report.

Five times Switzerland has managed to win the crown - each time with a Gruyère cheese.

The last Swiss to triumph was cheesemaker Urs Leuenberger from Vorderfultigen (in 2022). /Telegraph/
