EU delegation in Tirana reacts to Veliaj's arrest on SPAK order

The European Union Delegation to Albania has reacted following the arrest of the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, on the orders of SPAK.

In the official statement, the EU announces that it is closely following developments, but emphasizes that it does not comment on ongoing legal proceedings.

"We are closely following the latest developments regarding the investigation against the Mayor of Tirana. However, the EU does not comment on ongoing judicial proceedings," the delegation's response states.

The European Union considers judicial reform and the strengthening of the rule of law as key elements in Albania's EU accession process. For this reason, it is committed to supporting reforms and strengthening justice institutions, ensuring their independence, accountability and compliance with European standards.

The statement also emphasizes the importance of SPAK as an independent institution in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

The EU underlines that this institution must exercise its work without political interference or undue pressure, considering this an important step towards strengthening the rule of law in Albania.

This reaction comes at an important moment for justice reform, as Albanian institutions continue their efforts to guarantee transparency and the functioning of the law.
