Several rings accidentally thrown in the trash at an Iowa hospital were found thanks to medical staff, maintenance workers, and a portable X-ray machine.

Susan Sinnwell said she didn't realize until the day after an X-ray on her hand at Grundy Hospital that she had thrown the napkin containing her grandparents' wedding rings in the trash, the Telegraph reports.

"When I threw the napkin away, it sounded weird when it fell in the trash. But I didn't think anything of it at the time," Sinnwell told Iowa's News Now.

Maintenance crews began the process of searching for the rings and discovered that the debris in question had been mixed with several days' worth of trash, and had been put into a compactor.

They checked 50 to 60 garbage bags using a metal detector, but had no luck.

Craig Buskohl, imaging manager at the hospital, brought a portable X-ray machine into the hospital's ambulance area to search through the debris more quickly.

He said it took about 45 minutes and 35 images to find the rings.

"It was really rewarding. Honestly, I didn't think we were going to find them - but we did," Buskohl said.

Sinnwell was grateful to have the rings returned.

"From the moment I connected with the team at GCMH, I felt at ease and cared for," she told hospital officials. /Telegraph/
