Greenland's political parties have shown a united stance in response to US President Donald Trump's claims over the large Arctic island.

A statement signed by five parties in the Greenlandic parliament stressed that the country's future should be decided by the people of Greenland themselves, not the United States, reports france24.

The parties called on the US to stop its "disrespectful" approach to Greenlandic land, insisting that Greenland is not for "purchase" or foreign rule.

US President Donald Trump has reiterated his claims about Greenland, saying the US must act to prevent China or Russia from taking control of this strategic territory.

He stated that he intends to achieve this goal "in an easier way", but added that if they do not achieve it this way, they will do it "in a more difficult way".

His speech has caused international concern, as he has not ruled out the possibility of using military force or economic pressure to achieve his objective.

Greenland is a territory with about 57 inhabitants and is under the sovereignty of Denmark, a NATO ally, which has rejected these claims. /Telegraph/
