Japanese scientists have developed a semi-solid, non-flammable lithium-ion battery that can overcome the limitations of conventional batteries. The study was led by Ryosuke Kido of Doshisha University and TDK Corporation, Professor Minoru Inaba and Professor Takayuki Doi of Doshisha University, and Atsushi Sano of TDK Corporation. Their findings were published on October 11, 2024, in the scientific journal Journal of Energy Storage.
Ryosuke Kido, the lead author of the paper, says that "the semi-solid, flame-resistant battery combines liquid and solid electrolytes, offering a safer and more durable alternative to solid batteries with high energy density."
The new battery design includes a negative electrode made of silicon (Si) and a positive electrode made of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811), which are considered next-generation materials. These electrodes are separated by a lithium-ion conductive glass ceramic (LICGC™) plate, manufactured by OHARA.
To improve compatibility and efficiency, the researchers developed non-flammable, nearly saturated electrolyte solutions tailored for each electrode. The solutions use tris(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) triphosphate and methyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate, which are compatible with the electrodes and the solid electrolyte interface.
Prototypes of semi-solid batteries with a capacity of 30 mAh showed excellent ionic conductivity, thermal stability, and electrochemical performance.
The battery showed a high charge/discharge capacity with stable performance over cycles and small changes in internal resistance. Tests revealed that the Si-LICGC-NCM811 structure, coupled with appropriate electrolyte solutions, improved thermal stability.
The new battery system has the potential to advance the development of more efficient and safer next-generation electric vehicles, as well as wireless devices such as drones.
The study represents a step towards developing next-generation energy storage solutions that balance safety, efficiency and environmental sustainability. /Telegraph/
