Union Berlin sporting director Horst Heldt has confirmed that Raheem Sterling (31) has been offered to the German club, but the transfer of the former Chelsea striker has not been seriously considered due to the very high financial demands.

Sterling is currently a free agent, having reached an agreement to terminate his contract with Chelsea, British media report.

The former England international is on the lookout for a new club after his move from Stamford Bridge was confirmed last week. In recent seasons, Sterling has struggled to secure regular playing time.

He made 31 Premier League appearances in the 2023/24 season, while he spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Arsenal. However, under Mikel Arteta, he failed to fully impress, playing 17 league games but starting just seven times.

After returning to Chelsea, Sterling was dropped from the first team and placed in the club's off-season squad.

Offer for Union Berlin, but no real chance

Union Berlin confirmed Sterling's name was suggested but the club did not consider the offer. The England winger was reportedly earning over £300-a-week at Chelsea, a figure outside the financial reality of Union, who are currently ninth in the Bundesliga.

Heldt stated briefly: "I had to rub my eyes. The offer didn't seem serious and we didn't take it any further."

Sterling, 31, with 82 caps for England, hopes to find a new club soon and end his career with the dignity that befits a player with such a rich CV. /Telegraph/
