German Foreign Minister warns of consequences of reducing Germany's financial support for arms shipments to Ukraine

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned on Sunday of the consequences of reducing Germany's financial support for arms shipments to Ukraine.

Speaking on the sidelines of a conference on Syria in Saudi Arabia, Baerbock said the German government spent almost 7 billion euros ($7.2 billion) on arms procurement for Ukraine last year.

If this were to be reduced to half or a little more than half, Ukraine would be less able to defend itself, she said, foreign media write, Telegraph reports.

Meanwhile, it is noted that Spiegel Magazine reported on Thursday that the German government is debating further shipments of German weapons to Ukraine.

According to the report, Baerbock and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius plan to mobilize around 3 billion euros in additional funds for urgently needed arms shipments to Ukraine ahead of Germany's parliamentary elections on February 23.

However, according to the report, Chancellor Olaf Scholz is blocking these plans, saying he does not want to present a completed deal to the next government.

After Germany's tripartite coalition government collapsed in November, there is no national budget for 2025. The government is instead working with an interim budget, which includes €4 billion in aid to Ukraine. /Telegraph/
