The Chicago River turns green again

The Chicago River has once again turned green as the city kicks off its annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Thousands of people lined the river and packed bridges Saturday and erupted in cheers as members of Chicago Plumbers' Union Local 130 - Journeymen sprayed color into the water from boats, carrying on a tradition they started about 63 years ago.

The coloring immediately precedes the annual St. Patrick's Day parade downtown. The day - which falls on a Monday this year - celebrates Irish culture.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity there in the fifth century, the Telegraph reports.

The dye is non-toxic. While the river stays bright for a few hours, some traces of the dye can remain for days.

A second St. Patrick's Day parade was planned for Sunday on Chicago's South Side. /Telegraph/
