The British government has made a decision that makes life easier for drivers

Drivers in the UK will soon be able to store and use their driving licences on their phones as part of the government's plans to launch a new phone app.

The Gov.uk app, due to be launched this year, would securely store the patent details and allow them to be used as a form of identification for purchasing age-restricted products, including alcohol, voting or travel on domestic flights.

A government spokesman said: "This government is committed to using technology to make people's lives easier and transform public services. Technology now makes it possible for digital identities to be more secure than physical ones, but we remain clear that it will not be made mandatory."

License plate information will be stored in the app in such a way that drivers can use it as an ID without revealing unnecessary information like their address.

It would also use existing security features in modern smartphones, such as fingerprints and facial recognition.

Otherwise, similar technology is already being used in Australia and Denmark, while the EU requires all member states to issue some form of digital ID before 2026. /Telegraph/
