Tesla considers building its own lithium refinery in Texas

Not a day goes by without lithium or Tesla being mentioned in the auto industry news, Tesla is not alone in the difficulties of securing raw material for the production of batteries.

The supply itself is not a problem, apparently we have enough lithium in the world. The problems are more geopolitical than technical, there are many serious ethical issues surrounding many of the lithium mines as well.

In order for the global car industry to achieve the de-carbonization goals set by governments, a lot of effort and millions of tons of lithium are needed. Arena Ev, the Telegraph reports.

The US is struggling with raw materials processing, Canada is expected to start supplying global carmakers, and China – in fact, no one knows what China's next move is.

With all this on the table, Tesla is not taking any more risks, it needs to increase its production if it is serious about fulfilling its promises.

The only way to support the production of Trucks, Cybertrucks, and the growing number of electric passenger cars, Telsa is poised to take control of strategic component supplies – including lithium.

On top of the production tax credits, there are nearly €2 billion in grants and nearly €20 billion in additional loans to build new factories for batteries and electric vehicles.

There are additional tax credits and grants available to states and municipalities that engage in clean technology.

The company has filed an application with the Texas Comptroller's Office to evaluate a lithium hydroxide refining facility on the Gulf Coast.

The proposed refinery would develop battery-grade lithium hydroxide and process the ore feedstock to a usable production state. /Telegraph/
