Many parents face the same challenge: their baby wakes up frequently, has difficulty falling asleep, or never develops a consistent sleep pattern.

Although this can be tiring, it is important to know that this behavior is completely normal in the first months of life.

Babies are just learning to distinguish day from night, are getting used to a new rhythm, and are seeking security through the closeness of their parents. With small rituals and consistency, it is possible to ease their sleep and gradually create more peaceful nights.

Sleep development depends on the maturity of the brain and the individual needs of the child. Some children can sleep for 6-8 hours without waking up around the age of six months, while others need more time. Each child has their own rhythm and it is unrealistic to expect all children to sleep the same.

As a general guideline, rituals can be introduced around the fourth month of life. This can include a set bedtime, a quiet bedtime routine, and repeating the same activities every night. However, there is no universal rule - every baby reacts differently.

The most useful tips for sleeping easier

Babies respond well to routine. Try to have your baby go to bed and wake up at about the same time each day. This helps develop a sense of security and predictability.

The last few hours before bedtime should be quiet and relaxing. Babies, just like adults, need time to calm down before falling asleep.

Reading a story, singing a quiet song, giving a bath, giving a light massage, all of these are small signals that tell your baby that it's time to sleep.

A blanket, soft toy, or a favorite piece of clothing that smells like the parents can further soothe the baby. It is recommended to put the baby to bed while he is awake, so that he learns to sleep in the same place where he wakes up.

If your child wakes up, speak softly, don't turn on bright lights, and avoid playing. This way your child learns that night is the time to sleep.

Before going to bed, remove anything that could disrupt sleep: wet diapers, noise, too high a temperature. The ideal room temperature is between 16 and 20°C.

Babies often go through anxiety phases, especially around the ninth month when they start to have more vivid dreams. Lots of closeness and attention during the day can reduce anxiety in the evening.
