Socrates was an ancient Greek philosopher who is considered the founder of Western philosophy. The most important source of information about Socrates is Plato. In 399 BC, Socrates is sentenced to death by the Athenian government on charges of denying the gods and corrupting the youth with his teachings. The jury offered Socrates two choices: 1) to renounce his beliefs; 2) to die by drinking poison. The philosopher chose the second. His student, Plato, was present at Socrates' death and described the event as follows: "After drinking the cup of poison, Socrates began to walk around the room to help spread the poison throughout the body, until his legs went numb. The numbness spread higher, reached the heart, its beating stopped and Socrates died". Socrates was 70 years old.
