Small electric cars were said to be the future – but are SUVs now “ruling the roads”?

Across the globe, more and more SUVs are being seen on – and off – the roads.

This is despite predictions from the United Nations of an inevitable move towards smaller, more environmentally friendly vehicles due to the urgency of the climate crisis and the rising cost of living.

According to the data, globally, 54% of cars sold in 2024 were SUVs, including gasoline, diesel, hybrid and electric products.

This is an increase of three percentage points from 2023 and five percentage points from the previous year, according to GlobalData, writes the BBC, reports Telegraph.

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), of the SUVs now on the road – both new and old models – 95% burn fossil fuels.

Manufacturers, however, say that their new fleets of such cars are becoming increasingly electric and that not all SUVs sold now cause an increase in emissions. /Telegraph/
