Sicilian town on the brink of collapse - landslide threatens hundreds of homes

The Sicilian town of Niscem is literally on the edge of a cliff today, after torrential rains that have hit the area in recent days have caused a massive landslide.
This natural disaster has put hundreds of homes at direct risk of collapse and has created great fear among local residents.
Particularly at risk is the city's historic center, which includes around 880 buildings, some of them of exceptional cultural and historical value, dating back to the 17th century.
Authorities warn that ground movements continue and that any new rainfall could further worsen the situation.
Due to the high risk, more than 1500 residents have been forced to evacuate their homes, while many families have temporarily taken shelter in emergency centers or with relatives.
The local government and regional authorities have declared a state of emergency, mobilizing emergency services, civil protection teams and geological experts to assess the damage and prevent a greater tragedy.
Authorities are working to stabilize the terrain and continuously monitor the endangered area, while residents express concern for the future of the city and its historical heritage. The situation remains critical and further developments will depend on weather conditions in the coming days.. /Telegraph/
