Selfie-taking tourists narrowly escaped death after being hit by a giant wave while standing on rocks during a storm in the Canary Islands.

Footage captured near the Faro de Sardina del Norte, in Gran Canaria, showed a group of tourists standing on a cliff as waves crashed in front of them, the Telegraph reports.

The group ignored warning signs and went through the protective fence around the cliffs, which are over 18 meters above sea level.

With their phones in hand, the tourists were seen in the video standing near the edge of the cliff as the waves strengthened.

A man stood and watched the wild waters, while a woman sat on a rock next to him, filming the spectacle.

But moments later, a powerful wave was seen crashing onto the rocks, sending a wave of water over their heads as the panicked group ran for safety.

The wave crashed onto the platform, causing fear among tourists heading to higher ground.

"Once again, lives are being put at risk by ignoring safety barriers at one of the most dangerous points on our coastline," warned Canarias 1500 Km de Costa, an association for the prevention of accidents in aquatic environments. /Telegraph/
