Scientists discover a herbal remedy that can boost your memory

A cheap herbal supplement that TikTok users claim is a 'natural' cure for ADHD and anxiety can boost memory and concentration, surprising results suggest.

Indian researchers discovered that the herb bacopa – which sells for $6.5 – may have the power to promote better brain function.

The results showed that those taking the herb performed better than others on tests measuring memory, concentration, alertness, reasoning and mental flexibility.

Compared to a placebo group given a sugar pill, the 40 bacopa users also saw a reduction in hormones linked to stress and anxiety, the study says. Daily Mail, the Telegraph reports.

The authors, who presented their findings in the journal Gavin Publishers, also noted that bacopa had higher levels of a protein linked to the production of new brain cells.

While its benefits are said to lie in the substance within the plant called bacoside, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

It is known that the substance has long been popular among TikTok users, who have shared videos claiming that it may also have memory-improving benefits for those with early-stage Alzheimer's disease.

Independent experts, however, are cautious about the new findings and say that taking the supplement involves risks.

Writing for The ConversationProfessor James Goodwin from Loughborough University said that bacopa could make some medications less effective.

"It inhibits an important brain chemical called acetylcholine and therefore can counteract medications," he wrote.

Additionally, a common known side effect of bacopa is digestive problems such as nausea and abdominal pain.

Otherwise, although there are promising findings, experts say there is not yet enough evidence to prove the health benefits of bacopa. /Telegraph/
