Russian drones fail to identify North Korean air defense radar - blow it up in Kursk

The "war-obsessed" pro-Kremlin military blogger posted a video on Telegram on Friday of what he claimed was a successful Russian drone attack on a "Western-made radar station" operated by Ukraine in the Kursk region.

Online analysis of the incident soon concluded that the destroyed radar was actually part of North Korea's as-yet-unnamed surface-to-air missile system.

The device was first seen during a parade in Pyongyang on the 75th anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) in October 2020, Telegraph reports.

The complete radar and control station rig is mounted on a 10-wheel truck that matches the images of the destroyed vehicle in the military blogger's video.

The system is said to provide short-range defense against a range of aerial threats, including aircraft, missiles, drones and precision-guided munitions.

It was initially thought to be aimed at protecting the government and strategic military targets in the North Korean capital.

The system has not been seen before in Ukraine, which has raised questions with analysts about where it came from, as well as where and how it was deployed.

It could be a previously unidentified weapons system provided to Russia by Pyongyang, along with ballistic missiles, ammunition stocks and cannons.

The system may have been manned by North Korean troops confirmed to be taking part in fighting in the Kursk region.

The suggestion is that the drone operator who carried out the attack was not familiar with the equipment, and assumed it must be a Western device deployed by the Ukrainians.

The incident highlights the challenges of identifying unknown weapons systems provided by allies, due to the "fog of war". /Telegraph/
