Russia has turned its back on Assad, it has no intention of helping him militarily

Russia currently has no clear plan for saving Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's power, nor does it see the need for such a plan, while the army under his command continues to abandon positions on key fronts.

According to sources close to Russian diplomatic circles who spoke to Bloomberg, Moscow is growing increasingly angry at the inability of Syrian troops to maintain control over territories previously won with Russian support.

In recent weeks, several strategic defeats of the Syrian army have been recorded, especially in areas where opposition and extremist forces have resumed attacks.

This development undermines Russia's credibility in the region and further destabilizes the positions of the Assad government. Diplomats warn that the further deterioration of the situation on the ground could also endanger Russia's political initiatives to stabilize Syria, including peace negotiations under the auspices of the Astana process.

As Assad's government struggles to retain international support, its frequent losses raise questions about the regime's long-term sustainability. Russian analysts note that Moscow is unwilling to endlessly invest resources in a conflict whose outcome looks increasingly uncertain.

"Despite the fact that Russia has invested significant resources in Syria, the current situation shows that the withdrawal of Syrian forces is an obstacle to any long-term stabilization strategy," said a Russian military expert who preferred to remain anonymous. In addition to making it difficult to stabilize the situation on the ground, the failure of the Syrian army further complicates Russia's relations with other regional actors such as Iran and Turkey, who follow the developments from the perspective of their interests.

For Moscow, maintaining Assad's power is not only a matter of prestige, but also a key factor in maintaining strategic military bases in the region, including the Tartus naval base and the Hmeimim air base. However, a growing challenge remains the fact that the Assad government, even with the support of Russia, shows major weaknesses in the management of the army and the territory.

Russian sources suggest that further support could be conditioned on concrete reforms in Assad's military structure, including changes in the top military leadership. In addition, Moscow is considering the possibility of exerting pressure on the Syrian government to reach political compromises that may include concessions to the opposition.

For now, the Kremlin is balancing between maintaining its presence in the region and trying to avoid deeper involvement in a conflict whose outcome is becoming increasingly difficult to control. As the Syrian military continues to face setbacks, the question remains how long Moscow will be willing to invest in supporting the Assad regime. /Telegraph/
