Russia and Ukraine agree on largest ever prisoner exchange

Russia and Ukraine have agreed to exchange 1000 prisoners of war from each side, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov announced, following the conclusion of negotiations in Istanbul.

If the exchange goes through, it would be the largest prisoner exchange in more than three years since Russia launched its aggression in Ukraine in February 2022.

The Russians announced that a ceasefire was discussed and it was agreed that both sides would present their vision for it and that negotiations would continue on it.

They also announced that Ukraine had requested a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin, the Telegraph reports.

It is reported that the first direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in more than three years lasted less than two hours.

A Ukrainian source said Moscow's territorial claims are undermining the process.

It says the Russian demands are "detached from reality and go far beyond anything previously discussed."

They include ultimatums for Ukraine to withdraw from parts of its territory in order to reach a ceasefire “and other undermining and unconstructive conditions.” /Telegraph/
