Roberto Martinez explains why Ronaldo is still playing for Portugal at 40

Roberto Martinez has explained why Cristiano Ronaldo still gets calls from Portugal despite being 40 years old.

After making his debut with the national team in 2003, Ronaldo continues to be called up by his country 22 years later.

Ronaldo has 217 appearances to his name and has scored 135 goals, becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in international football.

Despite his age, he continues to prove his presence for Portugal and Al-Nassr, with the aim of reaching the 1000 goal mark in his career.

Portugal coach Martinez told Coaches Voices why he continues to invite the five-time Ballon d'Or winner.

"When I talk about a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, I also evaluate him based on three main aspects. His talent is indisputable, he is one of the best in the history of football."

"His experience is also unique, the only player to have played in six European championships and has more than 200 matches."

"But what stands out the most is his dedication. His passion to represent Portugal motivates the whole team."

"He is not part of the team today for what he was before, but for what he continues to be, the top scorer with 17 goals in the 21 games we have played in two years," Martinez said.
