Referee Marciniak breaks silence, reveals how Julian Alvarez's penalty was overturned

Apart from Julian Alvarez who scored it, the other main protagonist of the penalty in the match between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, which went around the world, was Polish referee Szymon Marciniak, who, together with VAR, decided that the goal was not legal, as the Argentine star had touched the ball with both feet.

The Polish referee referred to that game on the page Win Win, where he made it clear that he was the one who first noticed the situation.

"Did Mbappe tell the referees that Alvarez touched the ball twice? That is not true at all. I was the one who informed the VAR referees that there was a 99% chance of a double touch by Alvarez and they reviewed it thoroughly," the old man initially said.

"To be honest, I've never faced a situation like this in my career as a referee, but the players know the rules," Marciniak concluded.

UEFA later released a statement on Thursday afternoon to clarify the action.

According to European football's governing body, although it was minimal, "the player made contact with the ball with his supporting foot before kicking it."

Under the current rule (Laws of the Game, Law 14.1), the VAR would have to call the referee to indicate that the goal should be disallowed.

UEFA, as announced in the statement, will enter into discussions with FIFA and IFAB to determine whether the rule should be reviewed in cases where a double touch is clearly unintentional. /Telegraph/
