Red alert in Italy, bad weather hits the country - images show flooding from torrential rains

Footage posted on social media shows extreme flooding on the roads of Italy as a red alert for severe weather has been issued.

The north of the country has been hit by storms, causing landslides.

Roads and walkways are completely submerged under the rising water, turning the walkways into fast-flowing rivers.

It is reported that the Piedmont region, in north-west Italy, declared a state of emergency on Thursday as it was facing terrible weather.

Torrential rain and relentless storms battered the area, causing flooding and massive disruptions to traffic and rail services.

Turin closed access to riverside areas as a safety measure and a railway station came to a complete halt.

Milan closed its city parks due to heavy rain and strong winds, and the fire brigade in the capital Rome was called to over 100 incidents.
