Real Madrid is snatching Barcelona's top target from their grasp

Real Madrid are reportedly planning a surprise move to snatch Barcelona target Jonathan Tah from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.

According to reports from Fichajes.net, Madrid are keen to sign the 28-year-old to improve their defensive depth.

Tah joined Leverkusen from Hamburg for a reported fee of €9.5 million in the summer of 2015. He quickly established himself as a regular starter for Die Werkself and eventually became recognised as one of the best defenders in the German league.

He played an integral role in Leverkusen's unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning season and DFB-Pokal victory last season. Overall, he has made 380 appearances for the club in all competitions and has also played 33 times for the German national team.

With Tah's contract expiring at the end of this season, he is free to negotiate with other clubs over a possible pre-contract transfer. Barcelona are believed to be long-term admirers of the German and were even put in pole position to sign him by many media outlets.

However, recent reports have claimed that there is a possibility that current Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso could replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid in the summer. If the move goes through, the managerial connection could play a vital role in Tah's choice of his next destination.

Tah's compatriot and centre-back partner Antonio Rudiger also plays for Real Madrid, which could potentially influence his decision. /Telegraph/
