Scientists have managed to film for the first time in many years an extraordinary deep-sea creature – a giant “ghost firefly” off the coast of Argentina.

This rare moment was documented by the Schmidt Ocean Institute, which has published the extraordinary footage that has attracted public attention worldwide, writes bbc.

The firefly species, known scientifically as Stygiomedusa gigantea, is extremely rare and has only been recorded about 130 times over more than a century. This makes every sighting of it an extraordinary event for scientists and nature lovers.

The firefly can grow up to 11 meters in diameter, while its tentacles can reach up to 10 meters in length, giving it an impressive and almost frightening appearance.

Despite its imposing size, it poses no danger to humans: it does not bite and feeds mainly on plankton and small fish.

The video of the firefly quickly went viral on social media, as its strange, almost extraterrestrial appearance made it look like a creature from another planet.

This rare discovery not only fascinates with the beauty and grandeur of deep-sea life, but also adds to our knowledge of deep ecosystems and the enigmatic creatures that inhabit them. /Telegraph/
