AME: Prizren is an active seismogenic zone

The Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has announced that tonight at 22:05 the territory of Kosovo, namely the southeastern Prizren-Shtërpcë area, was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale and intensity VI on the Mercalli scale.
According to the AME, the earthquake had a hypocentral depth of about 5 kilometers, while the epicenter was located about 23 kilometers east of Prizren, with geographic coordinates 42.144 and 20.985.
"The earthquake was felt significantly by citizens in various parts of Kosovo and, due to its strength, had the potential to endanger citizens and cause minor material damage," the Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.
The agency emphasized that this event confirms that the Prizren area is an active seismogenic zone, as foreseen in the Seismic Hazard Map for Kosovo.
"Up to this moment, there are no official reports of serious damage or injured persons, while the responsible institutions are on full alert and are continuously monitoring the situation," the announcement states.
AME has called on citizens to remain calm and only seek information from official sources, while in the event of further tremors, to stay away from windows and objects that may fall, to take shelter under sturdy tables or near retaining walls, and after the tremors, to calmly go out into open spaces.
Citizens are also advised not to use elevators, avoid unnecessary vehicle movements, check homes for possible damage, and help people in need.
