Democratic Party of Kosovo MP, Xhavit Haliti, has commented on President Vjosa Osmani's proposal for constitutional changes that would enable the direct election of the president by citizens.

Speaking on FIVE on TV Dukagjini, Haliti said that this is an issue that, according to him, should be addressed by constitutional law experts.

He emphasized that according to the current Constitution, Kosovo is a parliamentary republic, where the main role in decision-making lies with the Assembly and not the president.

"I don't know how to comment on this. These are more issues for constitutionalists who are specialists. And unfortunately in Kosovo we have had or I don't know if we have. However, it is an attempt to say that something is being done. Because according to the Constitution, Kosovo is a parliamentary republic and the highest body, or the highest decision-making body is the Parliament, not the president," Haliti said in FIVE.

His comments come after President Osmani announced that she has submitted constitutional amendments to the Assembly for the direct election of the president by the people. According to her, the initiative was taken after successive failures to elect the president in the Assembly.

Constitutional amendments require the approval of two-thirds of all members of the Assembly, including two-thirds of members representing non-majority communities.
