A traffic accident between a KFOR vehicle and a civilian vehicle has left a police officer in Peja with permanent injuries.

The blow was so severe that doctors were forced to amputate his leg.

In this case, the officials who caused the accident will now be dealt with by the Italian state.

"A traffic accident that occurred a few days ago in the city of Peja that involved a KFOR vehicle, unfortunately a police officer lost his leg and is still being treated at the UCCK due to serious injuries. All legal actions have been taken on this issue, and due to the immunity that KFOR members have in Kosovo, this criminal case will be transferred to the jurisdiction of their state," stated Shkodran Nikqi - spokesperson, Basic Prosecution Office, Peja.

And while the workplace danger for police officers increases every day, the state still does not guarantee them a fundamental right.

Like this police officer, all other officials of the Kosovo Police institution, regardless of what happens to them, have not had access to health insurance for more than 25 years.

Although the Minister of Interior, Xhelal Sveçla, had promised to change this at the beginning of his mandate, this never happened.

Dukagjini asked the Ministry if there are plans for concrete steps towards preparing or finalizing the necessary procedures for implementing the health insurance law, but they have not responded.

Changing this situation, according to the retired Kosovo Police colonel, is vital.

"Considering the dangerous nature of the work, especially in traffic but also on patrols, I think it is absolutely necessary for police officers to have health services. This has been promised repeatedly by the Government from the first generation until now, their work is stressful, their activity is dangerous and often police officers remain disabled due to various accidents while performing their duties", stressed Refki Morina - former colonel.

In November 2023, the Kosovo Police protested twice in a row, demanding health and life insurance in addition to increased work-related risks and monthly stipends.

So far, none of the demands have been met.
