The Mayor of South Mitrovica, Faton Peci, who is also the chairman of the Guxo party, founded by Vjosa Osmani in 2021, has refused to speak to KosovaPress regarding the latter's situation regarding the "impasse" of re-election as president of the state.

KosovaPress attempted, on Thursday, to get a response or comment from him regarding the non-nomination of Vjosa Osmani by self-determination for the position of head of state. This party, which is also in coalition with Guxo of Pec, chose to give its trust for the position of president to Glauk Konjufca.

Peci refused to speak himself, but he nevertheless gave an answer through his advisor, Shkelëzen Haliti.

"The mayor only speaks about municipal issues, while for the election of the president you should go to the central level," the latter conveyed Pec's position.

Peci was one of Osmani's closest people, since this broke with the LDK, in 2020. He was her advisor and then one of the founders of the GUXO list, while after Osmani's departure from this party, due to constitutional obligations since she became president, he became one of its chairmen, along with Donika Gërvalla, who, also, has refused today to declare herself on the Osmani issue.

Peci was among the rare municipal mayors elected last year, to whom Osmani paid an official inaugural visit.

Today is the constitutional deadline for electing the president.

According to the Constitution of Kosovo, to nominate a candidate for president, at least 30 signatures of MPs are needed. The Vetevendosje Movement has 57 MPs, while no other party has 30 votes on its own.

To elect the president, at least 80 votes are required in one of the first two rounds of voting, or 61 votes in the third round, out of a total of 120 deputies in the Assembly, while 80 must be present in the chamber when this vote is taken.

If the Assembly fails to elect the president within the constitutional deadlines, the country faces the dissolution of the Assembly and early parliamentary elections. /KP/
