Oscars bosses announce ceremony will go ahead - despite reports it could be cancelled due to LA wildfires

Despite speculation about the cancellation of the film industry's biggest ceremony, the organizers of the Oscars have decided that the awards night will be held on March 2, 2025.

The massive fires in Los Angeles, which have caused the loss of life and the destruction of thousands of homes, had prompted reports that the ceremony could be considered inappropriate for the tragic situation.

According to a report published by The US Sun, there was talk of a secret strategy for canceling the ceremony, to avoid being perceived as "ignorant of the crisis," writes Dailymail.

However, sources from the Film Academy have categorically denied these claims, stressing that there is no advisory committee that includes well-known names such as Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg and Emma Stone, as had been reported.

The Academy's decisions are made by a 55-member board, which includes four people who lost their homes in the fires.

In a recent decision, the board has decided to postpone the announcement of nominations and extend the deadline for voting.

Other activities related to the ceremony, such as the nominations luncheon and the technical-scientific awards, have been canceled or postponed.

But the consensus is that the main ceremony will be held, with a restrained format and that it will include fundraising for the victims of the fires.

An anonymous source stated that The US Sun that the Academy's main concern is not to appear to be celebrating at a time when the people of Los Angeles are dealing with deep loss and grief. For this reason, the main priority will be to focus on support and humanitarian aid.

Additionally, the board has decided to eliminate luxury gift packages for guests, which typically include expensive trips, jewelry and exclusive treatments. These gifts, worth $171,000, have been deemed “inappropriate” for the current situation.

The nominations for the 2025 Oscars, which were originally expected to be announced on January 14, have now been postponed to January 23. The voting deadline has been extended to January 17, to allow Academy members more time to cast their votes.

In a letter to members, the Academy expressed its deepest condolences to all those affected by the devastating fires in Southern California: “Many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area. We stand with you and support you during this difficult time.”

The Academy also announced that activities such as shortlist shows and Bake-Offs will be adjusted accordingly.

Despite the enormous challenges, Oscars executives are determined that the ceremony will serve as a platform for solidarity and support for the community affected by the tragic fires. /Telegraph/
