Opposition demonstrations after the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu

Following the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, a large crowd gathered in front of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) building in Saraçane on Wednesday evening.

The rally was held as a result of a call made by Ozgur Ozel, the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP), foreign media write, according to Telegraph.

Dilek Imamoglu, the wife of Ekrem Imamoglu, was the first to address the crowd that had gathered in front of the city hall.

She began by thanking everyone who had come despite the weather, saying: "I am grateful to all of you who overcame obstacles to be here today."

She stressed that her husband's detention was not just for her, "but for the will of the 16 million residents of Istanbul, for the pensioners who benefit from social programs, for the young and for the poor who are oppressed by the current government."

Dilek continued: "Today, we are all under detention. Today, what is under detention is the rule of law, justice and democracy. Today is the hope for a peaceful, happy, just and democratic Turkey for 86 million citizens."

One hundred and six people were arrested in Istanbul on Wednesday as part of three separate investigations.

Among those arrested are high-profile individuals such as Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, artist Ercan Saatci and journalist Ismail Saymaz.

The investigations cover various issues, including corruption, terrorism and the 2013 Gezi Park protests.

Turkish Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc also stated on Wednesday that the presumption of innocence until proven guilty remains in force, commenting: "Let us all wait patiently for the outcome of the investigation. The trial will clarify the charges, the defense and the evidence, and the truth will be revealed in due time." /Telegraph/
