"One Xhaka leaves, another will come", the end and new promise in Basel - Taulant Xhaka retires from football

An evening filled with emotions and nostalgia in Basel, where Taulant Xhaka ended his career as an active footballer after 407 appearances with the red and blue jersey.

In its last match, Basel convincingly triumphed 4-0 over Lucerne, but the result took a back seat to the emotions brought by the farewell of an icon.

Before the match, the 34-year-old was greeted by fans, teammates and club officials. "It's been an extraordinary year. Today I give it my all for the last time as a Basel player," said a tearful Xhaka.

In the 34th minute, in honor of his shirt number, he was substituted for the last time, amidst applause and an impressive choreography from the stands, depicting his journey with the club.

Basel's victory opened with a goal from Albian Ajeti - who has officially renewed his contract until 2028. Philipp Otele, Anton Kade (with an assist from Xherdan Shaqiri) and Benie Traore then joined the celebration.

Xhaka leaves as one of the club's most successful figures - with seven championship titles and four Swiss Cups in his personal showcase, while on June 2 he will seek the fifth, in the final against Biel.

His brother, Granit Xhaka, was also in the stands. Amidst the emotions, he left open the possibility of joining the club that raised his older brother.

"One Xhaka is leaving, but another one will be here soon!" Granit said with a meaningful smile.

A worthy end to a career built with dedication, and perhaps, a new beginning for another chapter in the Xhaka family's history with Basel. /Telegraph/
