Netflix has decided to cancel a documentary about the life and career of legendary musician Prince, which was filmed over five years, and this decision was made following allegations of abuse against the late musician.

Following a deal reached between Netflix and Prince's estate managers, a new film is being planned that will feature exclusive material from his private archive.

The original nine-hour documentary, directed by Ezra Edelman, ran into problems when the estate's new managers revised its version. The film contained allegations of physical and emotional abuse, according to a New York Times Magazine article, which included allegations from Prince's former partners. Jill Jones, Prince's former partner, said the musician repeatedly hit her, while Susannah Melvoin alleged that he controlled her and prevented her from seeing her family.

The documentary also revealed other allegations about Prince's childhood, including information that he was a victim of abuse and could be emotionally manipulative. However, it caused controversy and resentment among the estate's managers, who demanded changes to the film. After seeing the first draft, attorney L. Londell McMillan, the estate's administrator, submitted 17 pages of comments, requesting changes. Director Edelman agreed to some adjustments but was unwilling to budge on some issues, saying it's difficult to portray the truth when everyone has a different version of events.

The documentary, which included footage from Prince's private archive and interviews with more than 70 people, also addressed the tragic loss of his son, as well as his difficult childhood. Although the project attracted much attention, after a private screening in July 2024, representatives of Prince's estate called it sensational.

Charles Spicer, a friend and former business advisor to Prince, stated on Platform X, which was later removed, that it is the responsibility of all guardians of Prince's legacy to portray his life with honesty and dignity, emphasizing its magnitude and complexity.

After it became clear that the documentary would not be released, McMillan further explained the decision, noting that Prince had human flaws but was an incredibly talented artist. He also stressed that while people are free to express their opinions, he will not allow his legacy to be used in a way that is inconsistent with his real life.

Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, died in April 2016, at the age of 57, at his Paisley Park home and studio, from an accidental fentanyl overdose. During his career, Prince released 39 albums and left behind a large number of unreleased songs.
