NATO 'scrambled' planes in Poland in response to 'abnormal behavior of a Russian plane'

British Typhoon fighters based in Poland and Portuguese F-16s from Estonia have been scrambled for the first time in response to the abnormal behavior of a Russian aircraft.

According to foreign media, reports the Telegraph, fighter jets responded to a "Russian aircraft not respecting international safety norms" shortly before 08:00 on Wednesday, the Allied Air Command posted on X.


"This is the first time for the new Air Police detachments, who are maintaining the integrity of NATO airspace 24/7/365," the post says.

As it is further stated, British Typhoons, based in Malbork, a city in northern Poland, and Portuguese F-16s from Ämari in northwestern Estonia, are the latest aircraft to take part in the NATO air policing operation covering the airspace of the Baltic states.

"British fighter jets based in Malbork were scrambled to monitor the plane. It approached Polish airspace...", is quoted as saying Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense, Wladław Kosiniak-Kamysz in Kraków.

Meanwhile, media outlets recall, the Swedish parliament recently approved the deployment of up to eight Gripen fighter jets to Poland.

This is within the framework of NATO air defense operations aimed at ensuring security and military and civilian support for Ukraine.

The Swedish Armed Forces will be available for NATO air defense operations in Poland from May 1 to August 31. It is estimated that the armed forces will consist of a maximum of 150 people. /Telegraph/
