The leader of the Movement for Unification, Valon Murati, has stated that redefining borders is the best way to complete Kosovo's statehood and make it a functional state - as the Trump administration has been established in the United States of America.
According to him, this idea, which has so far been rejected, could be a long-term solution for Kosovo-Serbia relations and to avoid future problems.
Murati suggests that this approach would ultimately resolve the disputes between Kosovo and Serbia.
"That idea would be good to be returned by us. Not to be imposed, I think that it is the best idea. Our state and national disaster has been the rejection of that idea. Because it is the only one that makes Kosovo functional. That is, through this idea, it concludes the statehood of Kosovo and creates the circumstances to, with a new international agreement, also undermine those parts of the Ahtisaari plan that are problematic for the functioning of the state... which will become a problem especially if the Association is established.
So the redefinition that would include the three municipalities, Leposavic, Zubin Potok and Zvecan, their Serbian part and the Albanian part of the Presevo Valley... let's solve it (the Kosovo-Serbia problem) we will still talk about borders. With Montenegro, which has recognized us, with Macedonia, which has recognized us, we have had a problem with deciding", said Murati.
Murati has criticized the approach of Kosovo institutions towards the dialogue with Serbia, describing it as insincere and unstable over the years.
Murati on TV Dukagjini emphasized that Kosovo politics has failed to treat dialogue as a mechanism to solve internal and international problems, focusing mainly on topics imposed by mediators, especially the European Union.
According to Murat, since 2011 the dialogue has been dominated by topics of interest to Serbia, while the issue of the Albanians of the Presevo Valley has been left off the table.
"The approach of our policy and the current government in relation to the dialogue has always been not serious. We have never taken the dialogue and the relationship with Serbia seriously. We have said that we are getting into this issue because our friends are pushing us. But we do not see it as a mechanism to solve problems.
Therefore, we have come across topics that have been imposed by those borders that have been called convenience, mainly the EU. And mainly topics that have interested Serbia. While waiting for this work to be done, we are closing this chapter. And our lives have been constantly made difficult by not treating it seriously, we have left the Albanians of the Presevo Valley out of the dialogue and even under pressure. I know that there have been moments that have been difficult to include, but at least you had to do it consistently. We have been here since 2011, now we are in 2025, if we had insisted since 2011, the circumstances would have been created to address the issue of eastern Kosovo", said Murati.
Murati also criticized the current government, saying that Prime Minister Albin Kurti has changed positions regarding the dialogue.
"We have been taken for granted and projects that have been imposed on us have been introduced continuously. And the culmination of this approach has been this government. Because when Mr. Kurti came to power, he said that dialogue is a priority, while what is being talked about and what he is trying to do, even when discussing the results of this government, is mostly about what happened in the north and with Serbia. From a politician who has said that these talks are not important at all, he mostly promotes their results," Murati added.
In addition, Murati said that Kosovo's approach to allies during the Kurti government has been one-sided and unprepared. He mentioned Kurti's open support for US President Joe Biden during the 2020 elections and participation in the Democratic convention in 2024.
According to him, Albanian lobbying in the US has traditionally worked with both major parties and this approach should be maintained.
"We have to be very careful and we should never have gotten into the adventure of taking sides. Because Albanians, our lobby there has traditionally worked with both administrations."
The approach of our policy and the current government in relation to the dialogue has always been not serious. We have never taken the dialogue and the relationship with Serbia seriously. We have said that we are getting involved in this issue because our friends are pushing us. But we do not see it as a mechanism to solve problems. Therefore, topics have come to us, which have been imposed by those who have been called easy, mainly the EU. And mainly topics that have interested Serbia. While waiting for this work to be done and we are closing this chapter. And our lives have been constantly made difficult by not treating it seriously, we have left the Albanians of the Presevo Valley out of the dialogue and even as pressure. I know that there have been moments when it has been difficult to include them, but at least you had to do it in a constant manner. We have been here since 2011, now we are in 2025, if we had insisted since 2011, the circumstances would have been created to address the issue of eastern Kosovo", added Murati.
