More and more people in California are leaving their luggage open, here's why

A car parked with the trunk open is an increasingly common sight in California.

Last week, footage of two SUVs parked with their trunks open went viral, giving the impression that this is a new trend. Local authorities suggest car owners not to do this after all.

Namely, the reason for this trend is the increasing number of car thefts. Therefore, owners leave the trunk open to make thieves realize that there is nothing of value in the car.

They mean it's not worth the effort to find anything of value in it. The same was confirmed by one of the owners of the SUV for Inside Edition, saying that he wanted to show that the cabin is completely empty.

San Francisco police point out that this is the wrong approach and that "a lot can go wrong." One possibility is that the owner has left some documents in the passenger cabin, which any thief can take without any problem.

Vehicle thefts are up 32% this year, while other data shows this year's increase is still high at 27%.

Police suggest that owners report any suspicious persons. /Telegraph/
